Hack arround, learn how it works, learn what you can do and what not, learn how to learn!
If you brake it, you can still do a grub-install from a live environment or (Even better!) run grub-install from the running system before hacking but point it to a usb stick. That way you can screw with grub as much as you like and stick in your usb to boot if you screw up.
(Or the other way around, hack on the usb).
That's how I learned my shit, by fiddling and modifying EVERYTHING until it broke (and I fixed it again).
HACK, LEARN, BREAK, FIX, REPEAT.

@Kimmax ++ to this. Also uncomment that line at the bottom of your grub config, it'll make it beep at boot :D I modified the frequencies to match the mushroom power up from mario
