Have you tried updating the settings? If you're having trouble with it, I suggest giving your local mailman a call so he may walk you through the arduous process.

Windows updates take fucking long because Windows is misdesigned. It cannot update DLL files while they are in use.

So it takes a looong time for storing all the ridiculous bloat and useless crap and even more bugs, and then another looong time to copy over the updated shit upon boot because even the copy function is inefficient, and then even several boots because the updater is also misdesigned.

On top of that, it frequently happens that Windows updates reset various settings, among them privacy and update ones, so that it becomes a never-ending cycle of shit and tinkering.

@iiii I configured it properly and it still completely ignored the active hours setting and updated whenever the hell it wanted to. So I disabled auto-updates with group policy because I was so fed up with the whole thing.

@EmberQuill there's a policy to disable automatic installation as well.

For 5+ years of using the very same Insider install of Windows 10 I've had exactly 0 forced reboots during the day. The only weird shit it has tried to pull on me is waking up during the night to update, but that can be tackled too.

My point is to set up Active Hours and a bunch of group policies and stop whining.

I've had this with Windows 10 (when I had to use it) as well.

@linuxxx What some people just don't get is that one of Windows' main problems is their massively reduced QA which basically can only detect problems that would hit everyone.

Which is why tons of people are hit by random problems, others aren't, and in absence of a qualified test department, the Windows devs can't even debug that shitfest anymore.

Honestly, if you think the Windows Update process doesn't have problems, just check out the news reports about every single Windows 10 Feature Update ever published, that start with "Microsoft warns users not to update yet due to..."
