The bully was the only one who had worked on the project for longer than a month because all the rest of us even the lead had just been brought on a month or 2 ago to build the team. So he was allowed to get away with whatever he wanted and everyone was afraid to say anything about it because they felt he was too critical.

No worry too much dude. This is a lesson, just that. Take the pros throw the cons and go forward. About the money, you will figure it out a solution, that's what we do all the time.
There is no problem forever, this one will pass and another one will come. Life is a sequence of problem to solve.
So go ahead and let the old go. Pick you language, fill the inputs and send a bunch of resumes.

@davidcondrey good luck to you. It seems the job market is picking up. It sounds like you are a good Dev but got on the wrong side of someone who had the managements ear. I have been in the same boat. It is humiliating but most of the people I admire got the same kind of treatment now and then. Office politics are extremely frustrating.

stisch46038yChin up, kid! The beginning of the year means new budgets, which means hiring will definitely pick up.
Also the guy that let you go was a wad and screw that place for wasting your time. -
@davidcondrey sounds like you got royally HR screwed. My advice: spend as much time as you can with the following activities: applying/interviewing, learning a language / design pattern you are passionate about or is in high demand, answering questions on stack overflow about topics where you have some expertise.

I feel bad this has happened to you but what on Earth made you think sending yourself home early would be a good idea?

I'm not one to enjoy the days when there is no work to do. It just makes the day drag on forever. I could have continued to sit there feeling ignored watching the clock tick by.
I have little patience and 2 weeks of boredom was enough to push me over the edge. -
@davidcondrey It is miserable to sit there with no work to do. If you spend your time learning new thing or working on personal projects you can get in trouble too. When I was in that situation I gave 2 weeks notice.

I was laid off right before Christmas because my manager would not give me any work (bully.. possibly discrimination). I asked for work to do for 2 weeks, even coming up with things to contribute on my own. My contributions were rejected and the lead developer agreed with me that it was fucked up but did nothing. The little work that I was given was always completed above standard and the lead dev had made comments praising my self tasked contributions but each rejection I was told it would be shelved for version 1.2.
Finally fed up, feeling as though I was being completely ignored, I told the lead dev I was going home half day early if there was nothing for me to do. The next day the CTO fired me and even lied to my recruiter telling him that I had not shown up for work for 3 days (easily disproven).
It's now the first of the year, probably not the best time to be looking for a new job, and my current outlook is that I am not going to be able to pay my rent at the end of the month.
My motivation has diminished, my confidence is gone. Job prospects are few. I don't know how to proceed.
