my 4TB Seagate HDD is failing in a very strange way:

I noticed an issue where my PC would just outright hang for a minute or two occasionally when swapping to the 4TB HDD. When I look at logs, when it hangs, the 4TB HDD times out but then on a retry IMMEDIATELY reads whatever sector just fine. In fact, it reads fine constantly for a few days until the same sector has an issue. So, the timeout is a remap, then? No, as the spare sector and bad sector counts in the SMART info don't change. It doesn't even change how many read errors or anything it's had. Strange, but let's test it with Seatools to be sure.

Tests go as follows:

- Short: pass
- Short: pass
- Long: seatools immediately crashes. Reopening seatools, it pulled a serial of all zeroes... okay....?
- Long: seatools immediately crashes. Seatools gets the right serial on reopen.
- Long: pass
- Long: fail
- Long: pass
- Long: seatools immediately crashes. All zero serial again.

i have no idea what's happening

Neither do I. But I don't have a clue about how drives work anyways, soo *shrug*

Replace it. If you have one bad sector, you'll soon have others.

@Ranchonyx I'm old enough to be your dad, so I'm entitled to these jokes. Oh, and get off my lawn, young boy! ;-)

@Ranchonyx If you're in your early 20s, that would work out as far as age is concerned.

@Fast-Nop okay, I take it back.

Could be a controller failure. Controllers do have rom, don't they? Could it be the rom's flash storage that's failing?

Not sure if consumer-grade hdds have a cache. If it were an enterprise setup, I'd also suspect the cache - explains it all

@netikras consumer-grade HDDs have had some cache for a while, like 32MB or so is the recent "higher-end" amount, but yeah. I mean, could be, but it times out on the bus like entirely for like a minute before jumping back to life, but during the drop it's still spinning and such, so it's not power, and the cables and such were ruled out by using many cables, controller by using several machines, etc.

@Parzi "controller by using several machines" - huh? Have you been moving the plates/controllers around? Between different hdds?

@netikras "ruled out the controller by using several machines" yes

@Nanos yes, none nearby, no, no, yes, yes, yes, no, no.

it's been in many places in the house and like 300 miles away too and it's still occasionally just disappearing off the bus for no reason
