When did programming get a logo? What supernatural power has authority to assign a universal pictogram to the art of orchestrating automatic devices to carry out tasks for us?

Its not a programming logo. Its at best a symbol or icon for markdown languages or scripting

I can agree this symbol is used to represent code in menus an other stuff, but have in mind it was chosen by front-end people, probably designers.

I think it stems from the "edit html code" in WYSIWYG editors and muggles first steps. When web got big people sniffed on "coding" by doing some html.
So for those kind of people it probably makes sense. But hey the browser is also called "the internet" and the official logo is an E.

Yeah we really don't have an official logo/icon. We are smart enough to understand what they mean and it doesn't look bad.
