If they've spent a few years in Matlab, that definitely counts. Show sum love for the functional, mathematical, science programmers out there.

It's silly to choose over python for anything other than that, not to mention how expensive it is

Yeah Matlab may not be the most superior programming language but the knowledge required to write useful programs on it like filter design requires a lot of skill and devotion.
