Interviewer called me useless for reason that I am a self taught programmer and don't have a degree. She told me that I will have no future. Because self taught are just useless who who try to fit in the club.

This personally offend me so much. Yes, I'm self taught. At least I have a heart of learning rather than being arrogant ....

@Lensflare they also told me that their company is the best and top in Europe. (Usually in my country European country will not act this way , they have more strict procedure instead of insulting me.)

They don't teach anything in a comp sci degree that you can't learn on the internet. If she knew what she was talking about she'd know that.

But hey, it's not like it's any great loss to you. If that's how they're hiring developers they have no idea what they're doing. You don't want to deal with that inevitable mess.

@johnmelodyme They do teach. They're just not the only source for any information they teach. They're arguably not even the best source. It's like 50/50. Depends on your personal preference.

And yeah most people have to supplement uni with their own study anyway. Uni doesn't cover everything and it would be impractical for them to try.

I have a degree in Software Engineering and personally I feel like it was a waste of time.
I mean it's nice to have it for better pay and chances in the job, but practically it's pretty much useless. The vast majority of what I have "learned" by studying was completely theoretical and could not be applied in practice. Or it was outdated within a year.
Devs need to constantly learn new things anyway.

@Lensflare I see, I think I have wrong perception of people with degree must be smart.

A few examples of useless stuff done in uni:

* "Coding" on paper.
* Learning advanced math and proves
* business and financial stuff (may be useful if you want to freelance)
* complex algorithm theory
* formal languages and grammars

Some of that stuff may be useful for a specific kind of dev job but definitely not for regular devs.

I did my degree long ago but coding on paper appears to be the practice even today.

It is as idiotic as it sounds: You are writing the code with a pen on a piece of paper. For example Java code.

Reality is you don't want to work in a company that hires people like that.
