I've tried to stay out of the fray regarding replacing long-standing terminology to use "safe" inclusive wording instead because it doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me to just use the new wording. If the old wording wasn't hurting people (this is an argument that a of a lot of people use regarding this mass naming change movement) then the new wording shouldn't hurt anyone either...

that was just my 2 cents on the topic, until today!

Some dumb motherfuckers are trying to replace the word 'execute' with 'start'/'run'.

That's just some fucking ignorant plebian shit right there. The literal definition of execute is:

"The act or process to carry out fully or put completely into effect"

"to do what is provided or required by..."

"to perform what is required to give validity to..."

start and run don't grammatically encapsulate what execute does. And now I sound like a fucking grammar nazi because this shit is getting under my skin more than it should.

Execute's primary definition is grammatically correct for the context in which it is used.

Change Master/Slave for databases and I couldn't give a single solitary fuck about it. Primary/Secondary works just fine too. The grammatical context isn't blown away here.

But take away my execute and sudden I get all hot and bothered with the desire to punch a nun over how stupid this "offensive words" crusade is.

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

This is why years ago, Eric S. Raymond wrote the famous essay "Why hackers must eject the SJWs". Unfortunately, hackers didn't understand the main problem, i.e. that this kind of shit stirring will never stop now, because they made the mistake of allowing shitheads to get a foothold, and there you go.

We shouldn't use "execute" for because of this guy:

Execute is offensive to those same few bored as fuck ass clowns who want to do away with master slave. Let’s change commit bc implies suicide. Let’s not call objects objects bc what if someone creates a woman class? Calling an instance of that class an object is calling a woman an object. Let’s not use the word “fire” when saying “this function fires” bc that relates to firing a gun.

Oh and primary/secondary is actually quite different from master/slave.

In a primary/secondary architecture, the secondary becomes the primary if the primary is down. In a master/slave architecture, the slave does nothing if the master is down.

Good example of "safe" language damaging technical clarity.

It's all fun and games until someone pulls out the offence bandwagon.
  • 2
@Fast-Nop fuck, didn't even think of this
  • 3
@Fast-Nop if master/slave can be replaced with primary/secondary, it should have been called that in the first place. And in many cases the new terms are more correct.
  • 4
@electrineer Which is why it wasn't called primary/secondary in the first place. And no, dem poor niggas in da hood ain't gonna fucking care. It's bored, sheltered, white, middle-class, useless shitheads who are stirring that up.

@Fast-Nop exactly. I bet mark zuckerburg has a boner over this “issue” and I doubt he’d let a black man or Hispanic near him

I swear the only reason some people want to change precise terminology to make it safe completely out of context is to justify why they still haven't been fired yet for gross incompetence.

I am all for making the workplace more acceptable for everyone and everybody deserves a chance, but this is just hypocritical and misses the entire point of being inclusive.

@PepeTheFrog their companies where they “work” can always create a new role for them...they should call it “safe space engineer” 😂

    @Fast-Nop Leader/Follower, Producer/Consumer.

@C0D4 I'm gonna start the reverse offence bandwagon trolling, tired of this bullshit at work.

"So I am not allowed to have an educated opinion because I have not lived slavery? Wait, do you assume that because I am white? What makes you think I and my ancestors were not actually poor and slaves? That's actually racist, mate. You should forfeit your right to speak too since you are offending me."

@evaknievel "Leader" is pretty much a burnt word, too, because that's how fascist dictators called themselves, and the North Korean one still does. Producer/consumer is wrong because that's not necessarily how M/S works.

An M/S architecture has the master issuing commands, and the slave may just execute them, which would be producer/consumer. However, the command may also be a request for reply, and then the slave produces an answer which the master consumes.

The actual point is that the slave will never start talking by itself, and that allows an easy control of a shared bus with one master and several slaves so that you'll never run into bus contention and have deterministic timing by sequential round-robin addressing of the slaves.

Okay okay okay... here me out...

Instead of M/S for terminology, why not Dom/Sub?

    it's sleek, it's new, it's refreshing, it's sexy 😉
