It seems like GitHub just got blocked here in China...

the gov: *talks about the importance of tech-related education all day long*
also the gov: *blocks every major site that provides good programming-related resources/education*

Do you think they will build something similar to github

Looks like China is on a steady course to becoming another North Korea.

@Sony-wf-1000xm3 It's not the platform itself, it's all the content that's in it. Otherwise basically anyone can spin up their own GitLab instance for example.
  • 1
@Sony-wf-1000xm3 They already have, but I forgot its name.
  • 8
@jespersh it's no news that China restricts access to information they don't control
  • 2
huh I thought they did that a long time a go?
  • 7
Would securing one's website against Chinese hackers actually work - by including some hidden keywords that the Chinese government is known to strongly dislike?
  • 5
Oh, and please don't pretend to be smart by naming a few such words here because that would shut out Chinese devRanters.
  • 1
    Jeezus that sucks.

Is stackoverflow banned too? If so, what's it like to code like it's the 80s again?
  • 6
So, those aren't rumours, you guys are living in hell
  • 2
@Gnu-Not-Unix there is a copy of every web service in china and most of the times they do it better. But yeah it's sad that state of software progress overall will be decoupled from the rest of the world.

    Startup idead !

Create a tunel to stack oberwlow, working in china. 0.5$ per search
  • 0
    @Sony-wf-1000xm3 They already have Gitee
  • 6
@heyheni There is a copy of everything in China, including even a copy of China itself.
  • 9
Jian-Yang are you copying all those companies for the chinese market
  • 2
@Fast-Nop government wouldn't block their own hackers
  • 2
    @Fast-Nop

    > securing one's website against Chinese hackers

Depends on which hackers. State-funded hackers are most likely exempt (to a certain degree) from blocks.

@electrineer I was thinking of the "let's try to log in with a WordPress account on a site that isn't even built with WordPress" calibre. I see that a lot in my access logs.
  • 6
@Gnu-Not-Unix Stack Overflow seems fine currently.

It actually isn't that terrible for programmers, as almost all Chinese programmers use VPN to access Google and similar services. However it is quite annoying to load up my VPN every time I need to take a quick peek at someone else's repo.

And of course, the "banning everything" trend is quite concerning...

@davidmaamoaix I read they have been cracking down on VPNs for years?
  • 8
@heyheni I assure you that most of them are not better.

Gitee is quite irritating to use. Apart from the slow response and confusing UI, it has a tiny user base (if it somehow mirrors all repos on GitHub then I assume it would receive more attention (not sure how that would be legal though)).

Some other copies here are downright nightmares. What, double 5 seconds ads on YouTube is annoying? Well, welcome to Youku's 60 seconds of unskippable ads.
  • 5
@Fast-Nop Kind of. But there are always new services/privately owned VPNs, making it almost impossible to block all of them.

Moreover, there are still businesses/schools that rely on blocked sites, so I guess they aren't too harsh on VPNs.
  • 1
So funny, they blocked the content but no the website itself.

And I've used csdn.net and 百度云 once or twice
  • 0
@davidmaamoaix do you have any ad blocker for youku? My traditional ad blocker doesn't know how to block Chinese ads
  • 1
When I work in Ningbo, I used platform like CSDN, gitee, 百度搜索 etc.... Or even crazier...the company I worked with created their own got client in Aliyun Tho.
  • 0
Sounds like my company too... Is it that much better that I have to use my phone to agree github....
  • 1
    @theabbie 人人網?is the most shit platform.... ...
  • 0
@Fast-Nop I don't know why this is so accurate and funny....
  • 1
@theabbie everything is copied in China , the app 小紅書technically copied the idea of Pinterest and just ...
  • 3
@johnmelodyme China is like a different planet, isolated from the world, so, they can make everything for China seperately, pinterest is not something very innovative, so, copying it is not a big deal.
  • 0
@johnmelodyme Americans only use 100% original, like MySpace, Hotmail and Vimeo
  • 2
@eo2875 but Hotmail is Indian tho.

@kamen To be honest, most of the countries are trying their best to become like North Korea. That way, they and their offsprings can rule the country forever. And by ruling, I mean, not letting them speak against the government so that they can spread their propaganda and keep on stealing money and build empires somewhere
  • 0
https://gitee.com - Chinese alternative. Regardless that sucks dude.
  • 0
@Xoka @kamen China is not secluded like North Korea. They own a lot and keep taking things over. They are more about conquering while protecting their might by any means.
  • 2
@kamen A North Korea the rest of the world has no power over. As its economic power is too huge.
  • 0
    @hjk101 @JFK422 Yeah, that's even scarier.
  • 1
@JFK422 Even worse, they have nukes - so the usual way of bombarding the country into freedom and democracy would backfire.
  • 0
@Fast-Nop to me that argument seems pro-bomb...
  • 1
@eo2875 From their POV? Of course, that's why they decided to afford these pretty expensive weapons. On the other hand, ending up like Iraq or Libya would probably incur higher costs overall, and just becoming a US vassal state isn't on their menu, either.
