If Angela Merkel, Julia Gillard and Bernie Sanders were in charge of the internet, what would change?

Let's throw Jacinda Ardern in the pile as well. Just for the fun of it.

    Priority lanes for faxes?

I'm sure I'll get shot down immensely for this, but from the little I know I think it'd be better (talking of Bernie & Angela anyway, never heard of the others.)

Pretty sure Bernie wanted to ensure high speed internet was available for all, regardless of location (for free maybe? Or was that a Corbyn thing.) Only thing I know about Angela Merkel was she kicked off about European data being routed through the US / UK needlessly and GCHQ / NSA infiltrating it as a result. So she proposed that all data that doesn't need to be routed outside of Europe, isn't routed outside of Europe.

I think both of those are rather sensible suggestions tbh - not just for Europe but for all regions. No need to route data where it doesn't need to go, and high speed internet really should be ubiquitous by now.

That, in contrast to other politicians who seem to think the best way to manage the internet is to pass laws making ISPs block websites for "safety" reasons.

too political, this is my one pet peeve, the one thing I don't wanna read about here is political shit.
  • 7
Mutti Merkel doesn't know shit about the internet.
  • 3
I only know Merkel and I'm very sure neither me nor her want her to be responsible here. That's it.
  • 5
@Ranchonyx nope. our mutti doesn't know shitz about our holy Neuland.
  • 2
@rootofskynet Sadly. Would be nice If there she did though.

Whoa, I didn't expect this post was from you.

Bernie would make the Internet more about sharing knowledge to public and less about marketing personalities and material.

ie5 would be still a thing cause some people keep using it

    @AleCx04 @Ranchonyx @nitwhiz @rootofskynet
not the point. Point is if someone who is good at managing and getting things done, and who is not evil either, was in charge, what would change.

@NoMad nothing. Banning things makes people riot, allowing things shows the fucken animals in us. Things are restricted and at the same time free enough imo.

I heard Merkel is Hitler's daughter. Too consp theory?

@NoMad then why ask in your tags if this is too political?
  • 1
you'd have pink swastikas everywhere that would demand you give all your money to the .mx domains every time you clicked them...

@Demolishun No! Bad Demolish! Don't go down the consp path! 😡

@Guru31337 you've had enough weed for this year. 😛

@AleCx04 cuz I knew for shit some idiot will turn it that way by focusing on one figure only, or make up conspiracy theories. I'm still on the fence about deleting this tbh.

I'm baffled that some believe the Internet would be a freer place with politicians in charge.

As soon as anyone is in charge of the internet anywhere, it becomes worse.
  • 1
@bittersweet I mean, ISPs are already in charge of it. And Google. Which is why it ain't really free. (And dns and other service providers)
  • 0
@spongessuck politicians are hyped up managers tho.
  • 1
@NoMad I mean don't delete it, just don't get mad and throw insults when you ask if it is too political and someone says that they don't like looking at political shit in here. At the end of the day it is technologically related i guess, which is why I just left it at that.

@NoMad I think that's not necessarily an issue, as long as there are alternatives, competition.

Net neutrality wouldn't need any laws, if you could always effortlessly switch to a better, neutral competing provider.

If governments get involved with the internet, it should be for antitrust -- Build more independent infra, and break up vertically integrated companies which stifle competition.

@bittersweet I agree with competition, but no oversight means someone will have monopoly.

@NoMad Damn, you caught me. I was just about to spark some more! Helps mitigate the stress from this "Tech Support" gig...
