Which is worse?

- Staying at a company you helped build because you have an emotional attachment to it, even if it's not as good to work for now, people are leaving every week and pay is under market rate.

- Leaving a company you helped build purely for more money and a big name on your CV.

    @g-m-f That's a good way to look at it, in my case the company has been successful but that hasn't trickled down the guys like us near the bottom, just more managers... managers everywhere...

    If your heart is no longer in it then leave is what I say. Familiarity breeds contempt kind of thing !!!! You won't be giving it 100% and it will eventually show in your attitude to the work and your code

    As an effect on you, I'd say it could feel morally worse leaving simply for more money, but in the real world that's the wisest decision.

    Is there any room for you to be an agent of change somehow? If, on top of the company's problems, you can't see yourself being part of the solution, leave. As sad as it might be.

    lots of good advice here. Also, I'd like to add...

    Remember that this isn't your system. you may have built it, but it doesn't belong to you. while feeling a sense of ownership for your work can help you to be more involved. That feeling can tie you to a project that ultimately isn't yours.

    There is middle ground there too. You could leave for a better situation that you could maybe love that isn't the large megacorp. It is what I'm trying at the moment.

    @bananacanopy This is a very important point, thank you for making it. The co. in question has never offered shares or anything so have always considered people in my position as employees not stakeholders, regardless of how long they have been there.

    @danielfarrell Ideally I'd love to leave for another startup, often easier said than done though unfortunately!
