don't say CFLAGS in the Makefile.

is there a way to FORCE all invocations of gcc to have a specific option derived from an environment variable

like say -fPIC ?

the Makefile's layout makes me think adding CFLAGS isn't going to work.

the snapshot has some kind of version error which i think does affect how code gets genned

I think its recommended for makefiles to don't set things like CFLAGS with an assognment, but to append own options so that the build system can set some standards like -fPIC for all builds.
