Accepting job offer without looking at their codebase first.

Do places usually give you access to their code?

Who allows to peep in before signing the contract?

This includes each and every offer I have heard of

If it’s closed source then that seems difficult. If it’s open source how did you not think to do that?

Never actually thought of doing so before, but after numerous employments it seems as a good idea. What could go wrong if I peaked at the codebase in a closed environment, for example, at their offices + being watched over by someone?

If company is testing me before accepting my employment, why should I or You not do the same?

Same for me in my current job, working on a 12 year old codebase with frameworks that where state of the art 15 years ago.. Lesson learned: ask how much 'technical debt' there is in the existing codebase.

Let's say a place shared some code with you ... it's gonna be good code, probably recent ...

Just like we try to show our best at the interview, they do too. Not sure how much looking would tell you much.

Might be, but it’s the same as with recruited dev’s. They are going to show the best, but even that can have holes in it.

Even the newest code in my current company is trashy, so I would have definitely won something, if I saw it previously.

Every code has holes in it tho ... like you're never going to take a job if you're worried like that.

And if their code has 'no' holes ... they don't need more devs ;)
