But that's exactly the point: make modding as tedious and frustrating as possible, so that fewer people are incentivized/stubborn enough to do it.
Bonus points for dropping the number of modders to the point where you can say "Sorry, we've removed the ability to unlock the bootloader because almost nobody is using it anymore". -

I've tried it, I was almost there and then I had to open a windows program. I'm only using linux so I hoped that it'll run fine under wine (unintentional rhyme) but the most important window just renders a white screen. I'd need to install a windows vm now, but this shit seriously robs me of my motivation

Xiaomi's bootloader unlock procedure is So. Fucking. Tedious. I have no words... oh wait, I do. HIDING THE PERMISSION BEHIND A HUNDRED DEVICE-SIDE SWITCHES WON'T MAKE IT ANY SAFER, IT WILL ONLY MAKE MODDERS ANGRY. Why do you need a third switch besides OEM unlock and USB debugging anyway? If I toggled OEM unlock it's obvious what I'm trying to do and every other option should change to comply with that intent. Don't roll your own Android if you know fuckall about UX.
