They didn't win.
Apple just can't be quite as insane about app payments as before.
The various leaks of internal documents during the process will probably change more than this garbage. -
C0D4681953yIf you call that a win, you're dreaming.
Apple just has to allow 3rd party payments to be advertised, this doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things.
If anything this will lead to an abused system where we'll see:
$1.99 ApplePay = 500 credits
$1.99 Direct = 5,000 credits
And potentially greater credit fraud from shitty apps. -
@C0D4 "advertised" is a strong word.
Apple banned apps for linking to their own website which had a donation button somewhere. It was forbidden to link to or mention any form of payment outside the Apple ecosystem, even indirectly. -
C0D4681953y@deadlyRants "advertising" in the sense of dropping a link to an external payment system.
I'm sure for some apps it will be overly dominant. -
stop68703ythey destroyed an ridicolous rule, but there are more to tear down. The ruling is also not in effect yet, because they still can go to an higher court.

While Epic got a partial win here, i wouldn't call that an epic win.
Depending on how you read the ruling, you may now advertise or integrate alternate payment methods in your app or on a website linked by your app.
You still can't sell apps to the common iOS user without going through Apple's app store. So Apple's rules of what content is allowed in an app still apply. Updates also still have to go through Apple's system.
Apple still can arbitrarily decide whether you can do business with iOS users or not.
Whether that is a good thing or not, depends on who you ask - but Epic surely wanted that to change too... -
@Oktokolo I believe it’s a good thing that just any apps cannot be put into the App Store bc you gotta be careful with the things you have on your phone. It is what it is but it’s just gonna get harder to process apps thru the apple App Store. It’s one of the great things that we can have for our lives and our data on our phones.

They won on what they cared about - the money. I'd say internally at least, that was their primary goal.

C0D4681953y@Tfyoulookin4 the iOS market is what it is, for better or worse, due to the strict rules.
I think apples cut is to high personally for all transactions, but the flip side would be licensing apis which would probably be higher overall in the long run, someone has to pay for apples R&D
epic won against apple.
