rust claims dropbox, firefox and cloudflare all use it.......

firefox's performance has steadily dropped
dropbox's performance was always awful
and cloudflare is that weird software i see when i try to view sex cam caps that limits me to 2 mins a day......

my love is not growing.

Sure, you can produce shit in all languages. But there's a reason those companies adopt Rust.

Firefox only uses it for the new renderer, which runs much faster than the old one. The rest is Mozilla paying their CEO increasing bonuses with decreasing success, which doesn't tend to incentivize improvements.

@deadlyRants you make a good point. I just feel they could have made their claims to fame based on better projects.

@AvatarOfKaine Well, Rust was developed by Mozilla, no surprise they're using it and blowing their own horn at the same time. It also explains why people promoting Rust rarely make sense, mostly they just tell C programmers to consider using Rust...

@hitko i mean truthfully c could use an overhaul name wise at least.

    but yeah.

and some of the libs could be simplified and better laid out like libpng is awful !

@devTea I'd be more likely to regret lurking.

@AvatarOfKaine I open devrant from time to time, while running npm install

@devTea you should just make a goal of video chatting with me once per apocalypse so we can feel alive like the world used to be.

@AvatarOfKaine C can be whatever you want it to be ;) Someone even made a static site generator using C preprocessor https://accu.org/journals/overload/...

Anyway, C is so basic it can be compiled for just about any architecture as long as the processor supports some fundamental operations like memory access and arithmetic. There's only a handful of languages which can achieve the same portability. Sure, C libraries are hard to use, but if for example libpng was written in Rust, you couldn't use it on a $5 microcontroller because Rust compiler isn't nearly as portable.

@hitko its new so I believe that.

@devTea change your mind yet or don't you care for human interaction ?

cloudflare be hosting like over 3/4 of the web

Languages aren't magic. As an end user you're likely not going to notice an improvement (maybe better latency but that's about it). It's simply a better tool for the same job and as a dev that's really all you can ask for it

@12bitfloat I agree with the other comments, I don't think this sudden competitor to c is mature enough yet to be a better cure-all tool.

don't get me wrong I like some of the features I've heard about, but then did you ever hear the one about bill gates at st peters ?

@AvatarOfKaine To each their own I guess. For me personally Rust let's me do more with less work and in less time while being substantially more high quality than my C or C++ code

@devTea I can pretend I'm a cat and you're my 60 year old shutin owner if you prefer :P

You can pet me and feed me and stroke me :P
