@sariel Sandstone is not really a mineral, it's a sedementary rock. It does contain mineral grains, but calling it a mineral is kind of like calling a cow a pack of milk.

@bittersweet Fossilization is not a slow process. In fact, if it doesn't happen fast, it won't preserve the detail. There is a patent on the books that shows how to fossilize wood and make fence posts that won't rot.

Geologists like to talk about it being a slow process when in fact it is not. It requires a solution that readily gives up silicon. One such solution is volcanic ash and water.
