I have realised this the hard way. Never ever ever delete something if it’s backed up in cloud and is not taking space in your device, just to free some space.

Obviously some bullshit is better deleted. But never overdo it. You never know when you are going to want the thing you have deleted.

I have 2 regrets. Both related to deleting things without backup. But in my defence, I forgot that they were not backed up. Brain freeze.

    I don't trust "clouds"...

Rather I have twin 4TB HDDs, one as a portable drive I carry around and one on a home network as a Raspberry PI NAS and I have a short script written to sync the content of those two using rsync.

So whenever I'm on my home network I let the drives sync their content. This gives me both data safety and location safety and at the same time provides a nice, always available offline data and streaming service. I'm a bit of a data hoarder so pretty much any anime, tv show, movie and music I download goes on the drives as backup.

Separately from that I also have my phone set to backup photos and videos on the drive as well at midnight when connected to the network.

I've only been using this system for about 3 years but it's pretty nice. I might need to upgrade to a larger drive eventually, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there...

I backup some of my unnecceary cloud files on to CD's. Kept safely, it gives me an extra 20 years to decide if I still need it - provided CD readers are still around by then (USB powered CD drives should be)
I have a CD reel of crap I will "probably" never need
