I come from a front facing retail background. And I start my first developer job on Monday. It is also fully remote. They said I can take mental breaks whenever And unlimited pto as long as I use it wisely and don’t abuse the hell out of it. It’s a small company of like 75 people. They don’t want us working past business hours unless it’s urgent and something breaks.

Im like “uh what? You’re not going to yell at me for taking a 5 minute break after a homeless meth head screams at me and waives a wooden sword at me trying to hit me?”

It just feel like this is a grown up job. Like a professional job. I feel like I have work ptsd from being mistreated in the work place for 8 years. It doesn’t feel real. Does anyone else feel like this?

I had the exact same experience moving from an IT Call Center job to a dev job.

"You mean I can go grab a coffee after standup or leave in the middle of the afternoon to get my car inspected as long as I get my work done?"

It took a while to get used to having a job where I was treated like a professional adult.

@EmberQuill it just doesn't seem real to me. Blows my mind.

    Mine promises the above,
and yet I still lowkey get in trouble for not being around all the time. 🙄

But yeah, after working retail (and game dev crunch, and having some other terrible managers), it’s totally
odd, and wonderful, being able to work whenever is best for me.

    I feel you!

Startet my first developer job after years as a chef:

10 - 16 hour shifts on your feet, eating lunch hunched over a table while preparing for a busy night, that is if you even got time to eat a full meal that day.
    Sick days?? Forget about it..
You end up being a zombie, coming home at 1am, getting some much needed nutrition, taking a shower (You stink like onions and butter), needing some time to unwind and just be you, go to bed at +3am, getting up at 9 to do it all again..

Now i set my own schedule, work from home if i want to, have a lot of perks i could only dream of at my old jobs, call in sick if needed- without being pressured to show up, most weekends off, and the pay is better even tho im only in a trainee position.

Wouldn't trade it for the world!

@electrineer I agree with it. It’s nicely put. Straight to the point. I’m going to have to steal it.
