Trying to learn CSS for the first time is equally fun and painful

Css would be fine if it had an option to operate on the same instance-based system as DOM event handlers without a prohibitive performance hit, or if the event handlers would work on the same query system as CSS. The fact that you have an XML tree (forced leaves and optional leaves) and two different and incompatible approaches to reference it makes everything absurdly complicated.
