I usually start talking about the products we develop rather than the actual software I write.

It's not that hard is it? "I speak the language computers speak so I can make them do stuff, see those apps on your phone? They are build by using that language which will tell the phone or computer or dishwasher what to do. Without people like me telling it what to do or what to be, there won't be a Facebook or whatsapp or whatever" it's simplified but that's the thing, you got to break it down to a base level, most people understand it, even those with zero tech knowledge.

The term 'programmer' is well understood these days. And when you do meet that 'special' someone, I'll just say "IT". However, for an in depth description I'm having trouble explaining it simple. Haha
