Rhino, the server-side JS written in Java, came before Node as well, probably as early as 1997 if I understand Wikipedia correctly. Last time I used Rhino/Nashorn JavaScript was about 2018 for a company that used JS to script around their Java framework core. They had JS 1.7 with ES6-like String functions and E4X native XML extension that looked a lot like JSX to me.
