Joined this new team which said to have a rockstar teamlead with his right hand rockstar drummer senior dev. Turns out its just 2 socially awkward dudes who come into office once a week and all they care about is doing their own tasks and calling it a day.

The rockstar senior teamlead actually turns out to be an ex QA guy whos doing development only for the past 2 years and is unable yo explain what his code is doing and just starts rambling. I didnt expected spoon-feeding type of mentoring but man calling them and trying to get some advices makes me wanna die everytime. Fuck. My. Life.

I took matters into my own hands, Im doing pretty well actually and already am delivering, but man, if they dont give me a raise after probation ends then fuck this Im outta here. This is not what I signed up for.

These fuckers are pretentious egomaniacs who look good in their linkedin page but in reality are selfish narcissists.

Well real rockstars are usually pretentious, eccentric, don’t want to talk to anyone and only make rare appearances. So yeah I guess they match the description pretty well

A rockstar dev is the dev you throw into the fire to put it out when all shit hits the fan and no one can solve it.

Rollback's are for the faint hearted,
No rockstar dev will ever use that word!

Being socially awkward is a typical issue for all developers, we end up in a world of code and structure that doesn't apply to the everyday world, sadly there are devs who end up without social life's and focus their time in the realm of development, for better or worse.

Having a "rockstar" dev and having a socially adapt and friendly dev are not always the same thing, but when you have someone who's both they're great to work with.

Ps: rockstar is just a buzz word, just be a friendly dev who has a lot of domain knowledge on the project(s) at hand and you'll get there too.

Isn't probation period 3 months? At least that's what the trend is over here. Expecting a (substantial) raise after 3 months is not very realistic

Your team lead has been writing code for only 2 years, and has shitty communication skills. Is there anything he’s good at?

A recruiter sent me a message with a job description says “Are you the rockstar we’re looking for?”
I so wanted to say “No I am a developer not a rockstar.” It says a lot when they use this term just tacky, a big put off, and yes shows there’re are narcissistic tendencies and insecurities. It comes across as if saying we need someone to clean our mess. What is this rockstar, who the hack are you by the way? Are you a rockstar company? They don’t approach like that. Bugger off

@Ceren did the job ad have every tech responsibility known to mankind? I bet whoever gets that role will be grinding 24/7

If someone offered me a role in a team with a couple of "rockstar" devs I'd turn it down in an instant. I've learnt plenty over the years from devs with all levels of experience, but never from someone calling themselves a rockstar.

@nitnip its very realistic because I undervalued myself to begin with because I had a 1.5 year gap. Turns out Im delivering in this company from week2 while I could have spent my first month onboarding. Instead after first week I asked to be assigned to a team and started destroying jira issues one by one with minimal mentoring. When probation ends Im sure they will see my impact when we gonna count my merge requests and sum up total amount of story points collected. I will drfinetly have something to show and if they dont give me atleast a 40% bump Im fucking leaving because I can start on that rate anywhere else right now.

@zemaitis let me know how that works out. I haven't heard of people getting raises after probation. It sounds to me you like you over-delivered.

By all means, apply elsewhere. Find something better and leave. Once you take that decision however, do not accept a counter offer.

@nitnip I've seen people getting 3 raises during 1 year period. It all depends on your social skills, hard work and a little bit of talent.

    @zemaitis 3 raises in a year? That’s pretty sick

Just go on tour in Latin America, they usually OD on uncut drugs there.
