Should loyalty ever stop you from taking a better job elsewhere?

is a company ever 'loyal' to you? they'd better deal you if they could find someone to do your job cheaper in a hot second.

This is a really great question and I'm interesting to see the discussion. I think there are circumstances where maybe it should, but for the most part, if you work for a company, I would say no. In the end you're the one who cares the most about your career and I've found that any good company realizes that.

If you work for a company that scolds people who leave, then it's not worth being there anyway.

I know that it's much easier said than done. When you've worked for a company for a long time it's hard to leave and sometimes you feel like they've given you a lot. And they might have. But you also probably have them a lot so everyone got good value.

It depends on how you define "better"

There's no point in being loyal to a company that doesn't deserve your loyalty. Companies that *do* deserve your "loyalty" may have qualities that are harder to quantify, but those qualities should definitely be taken into account when determining which job is "better"

Better means more money and a higher title.

I love the people I work with, not the money though.

test their loyalty. tell them you got an offer for better pay. if they counter offer to match or exceed it, stick with them in my opinion

If your skills are better than the money you are being paid or the way you are being treated then move on!
