Dev: What do you think of the new version of the app?

Client: It’s great! We just have a couple notes of feedback we are working on compiling. We should have those to you by next week.

*Next week*

Client: We need another week to compile all of this feed back we are generating

*Another week goes by*

Client: Still working on it, it’s going to be a really thorough review when you get it though. No stone will be left unturned!

*2 weeks later*

Client: Here it is!

Attached: A word document with a single line of text “can’t nobody log in” next to a picture of the login screen with a red circle drawn around the login button

Client: Can you hurry up and action our feedback? We want to go live next week

Dev: …

Ah the good ole, drop it on you at the last minute BS. Been there done that way too many fucking times to count.

Oh you need this decision made within 3 weeks due to it being time-sensitive? We will have our decision made in 4 weeks.

“Hey I just wanted to verify that you sent the latest version of that attachment…” 😬🙃

I would've objected earlier. The mere idea that if they had lots of feedback points they would sit on them for a week until they got a complete list, that's just dumb.

Sure there's a good intention there of not bothering devs with incomlete/unprioritized issue reports.

But I prefer reports are sent instantly under the agreement that "devs don't have to read them yet. But can take a peek and can respond if they immediately understand issue. Or wait for the complete report if they don't"

    Me: 1 week later
We had to debug each component and rewrite a few of them

@jiraTicket I don't mind incomplete feedback at all, it's better than sitting around twiddling thumbs waiting for the full list to come through.

I hate being told "Implement X" and then a week later a meeting occurred that I wasn't aware of and "Feature X" is now shelved but I'm not updated until either I ask or a meeting occurs where I'm involved.

So you let 2 weeks go by without warning your client of the risks of their action delaying the project?

I gotta admit since this thread was created I've found myself in a mini project which has been delayed 😕 and now I can truly see why it's kinda hard to prevent.

I've raised all the flags, I've said to every stakeholder "I hope you're aware that we need X days between the last change and the release date"

Yet they somehow keep delaying changes and pushing the deadline

The only thing I'm happy about is I brought in an extra dev (who I trust and enjoy working with) and that makes all the difference. Sharing the weight, laughing about the crap etc - makes the bad times feel fine.
