JsonBoa30313yLet me put it this way:
- The company had an NP-Hard problem with their logistics for ship repair and refueling
- Since the eighties they've been solving it by the good ol' "fuck this, just do the same route, t'is good'nuff"
- I came on board to do data pipelining and saw the size of the sub-optimal mess.
- Six weeks of tinkering with some linear equations and I made an ILP of their problem
- Two more weeks hammering the ILP on some solver
- Another week to get some results
- Two months to verify the results
- My optimal route would save 2 times my yearly salary *on each round trip*
- And yet it took me a whole year to convince the brass to give it a try
- FRUSTRATING AS FUCK
- But now I have an operational research lab, a team, and a salary that screws my previous results.
- I would say that it is worth it ;)
Question: For those of you who went math mode, did you ever look back? Was your future grim, happy, or does that even matter at all?
