That's my guess at least :p -
QCat7958yIt began with vectorial screens for computers. Back then you only could have a black background.
When color screens came out most developers used black terminal backgrounds and switching from bright text editor and dark terminal made both harder to read, so most GUI IDE began to implement themes to match terminal color.
It was an ergonomy choice that snowballed into a trend
