Tell me your story

How you started?

@jackpearce it wasn't anything special, i got in a high school that had a technical course integrated. i really didn't care for it at first, i wanted to study biology, but when i got to programming it was fascinating, and it hooked me. i decided my career in my freshman year

In Germany there is often no classes in Programming and if there is it is mostly MS Office

There are a few schools in my area which had Programming classes and really teached them, but I often switched schools so these courses were already full.

Originally I wanted to become a Cop but I failed the Assessment Center because of two Points.

So I thought about a Plan B and decided to try making a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science

After two Semesters I decided, that programming is fun and I will make it my new Plan A.

@jackpearce my school was a federal institute, here in brazil we have them and they have college, technical courses and sometimes high school. the high school there was very prestigious, but we could only opt to do it with a technical degree and an extra year of classes. the school itself was in an industrial area, and it was supposed to supply people to the industry

Here in Germany we haven't enough teachers (but also doesn't hiring) and what we learn in school is not really helping in the industry.

Almost all schools here are federal here

Also for the University there are also two Types

University = Scientific and research

Fachhochschule (does not know whats called in English) = Like University but more focused on the industry (Professors can only teach there if they have 5+ Years of Experience in the industry)

Well it started for me 5/6 years ago with Minecraft, creating plugins/hacking clients and slipped into this "hacking" community. This made me start learning java and now I hate java.

Tbh it began way earlier with writing little batch scripts and tinkering around with computers/smartphones/phones/printers/"servers" but I wouldn't call that programming, more like loving to "hack" stuff.

@jackpearce i had programming classes in the "Gymnasium", at first it was just ms office but later on we started learning some basic java. Although the teachers weren't that good and my self taught skills were way better than what the others could learn in those lessons.

Well the only time I had the Chance to join programming Classes was in "Realschule" (that sounds so weird, when I am writing in English)

But we moved towns and the new School had also the Course but it was already full ^^' When I entered "Gymnasium" after "Realschule" there was no Teacher who could've taught us programming.

I was always good with Computers and liked using them or solving Errors. I understood very early how to google (this is always the first step) and was pretty interested but got crushed in the first Semester in University (Fachhochschule) because I never coded. (Yes Java was also my first Language ^^')

@jackpearce agreed with the "googling" this was the first thing i mastered years ago. Compared to others i always found information better and faster.

I wish I could love it again. But after work I have no desire at all to code personal stuff and at work it's not about programming anymore. Maybe a few minutes a day, the rest is dealing with people.

But every now and then I need to write a nice little algorithm and I'll spend every minute I get to optimize it and make it beautiful ☺️

@just8littleBit I totally get what you mean. Working with bad work/life balance or doing trivial tasks for long periods of time can ruin the spark ⚡️. We are developers for life after all, stagnation kills creativity and passion for us. For me meeting and chatting with friends equally obsessed with tech as me lit the spark again. But some times you gotta do something totally different like tennis or something and you’ll find your self crawling back for some good dose of bits and code.
