it's kinda telling of human nature that we had this big empty space on our fancy bright box and decided "huh i could be looking at something nice instead" and put on wallpapers there. i read recently how color is less prevalent now more than ever in our lives, so maybe wallpapers and pc customization are a way for us to hold onto some of that

just use an oled screen with a full black wallpaper.

    Save some money.

I don't care about the wallpaper because 80% of the time there is something in front.

Thus explaining the "laptop covered in stickers" trend

I have the top 1000 of Wallhaven's nature collection on a slideshow which are gorgeous and very colorful pictures, but I only notice it when I power off.

There was no colour in the world before 1855 when colour was first invented. The world gradually became coloured after that.

@electrineer But what about the paintings ?

conspiracy ? We need to know the truth !!

@Grumm paintings got their colours the same way everything else did. Black and white photos stayed that way because they're an accurate representation of the subject.

@electrineer well damn, that is one way of seeing things :D

@electrineer jokes aside, older civilizations used the colors from their environment to decorate their homes and crafts. that's something very human, to bring a little bit of nature home with us. now with the way things work we don't really have that anymore and everything is kinda gray for aesthetic purposes. it feels like digital medium is a solace in lifeless modernity

@darksideofyay interesting. One of the most colourful things in my bedroom is my bookcase.

@atheist how many colours does it have?
  • 2
@electrineer I dunno. I may have posted an incomplete thought. But more, the parallel of getting nature and knowledge from the outside world seemed quite apt, both bringing color into my life. And it being the antithesis of the digital medium.

I've been in meetings all day.

@darksideofyay my one is the Planets ordered by size close together.

My wallpaper on the computer is the Planets of our solar system ordered by size close together.

Liked the size differences of the Planets.

As people’s happiness decreases, the colors they display become more muted. The worse the economy in a country, for example, the grayer the colors tend to be. It’s not a rule, but it fits pretty well.

I have a few guesses as to why:
    1) Unconscious decision due to depression / poorer mental health.
    2) Those who stand out tend to be singled out, so bright colors in a world of gray makes you a target.
    3) Brighter colors tend to be more expensive, so people and companies avoid buying/producing them to save money. Also fits well with (2) as the bright colors signal you’re more affluent, and crabs hate a success story.

@Root For a physical object to retain a bright colour, it needs to be cleaned regularly. Budapest is a colourful city if you consider the original colour of the paint, but in practice most things are gray or maybe grayish dusty yellow. Relatedly, dust is less visible on desaturated and dark colours, so in places where cleaning of public spaces isn't likely to become regular in the following decades such colours are a safer bet.

@max19931 all of it centered in the middle of the screen.

Sun in the middle. Jupiter Saturn left side back, rest of the Planets in front row.

That is the wallpaper of my desktop.
