Just found out my wife is pregnant!! So excited! What should our little one's first programming language be? What age should they start learning??

Joy!!

    Congratulations!
Depends on the kid, or kids if the child process forks, but the old Logo language is pretty good baseline for logic.

That's hilarious. I'll look into logo. Maybe Python? Or basic? Anyways.. I have a few years until then! Lol

I caught myself thinking about that some days ago. I want so much that my future kids get into this world, it's so marvelous, but I'm afraid that they won't be interested in it, just like my sister whom I countlessly tried teaching logic basics but to no use...

Let him enjoy his/her childhood, try teaching at age of 12 😉

My theoretical physics professor told a story once. He has a son and wanted to teach him about physics, early, to share his passion. He told him about electro magnetism, a force seamingly invisible, but actually the reason why we can see - light and so on. The son was so scared, that he never wanted to know more about physics. He became a med. doctor. Nothing wrong with that, but the lesson is: 4 is too early for teaching electro magnetism. Logo sounds fine, I started around 3rd year of elementary, was fun. Delphi later, C++ with 14.

Go for C. He needs to learn pointers.

Let him be what he wants dont ruin his life by imposing ur dreams on him

@faluda There's a difference between encouraging someone to follow in your footsteps and commanding them to.
If they're not interested, either try again later or let go of the idea.

@JTBringe the moment u said try again later even though ur son is not interested shows how badly u want ur son to follow ur footsteps i am just saying it feels kind of dictator

    Javascript xD

    EDIT: php

@JTBringe let them explore and if they are interested teach them computer science algorithms and logics rather than focusing on programming language

Don't be shocked when he does comedy instead of code... #HeWillLeaveHisLife

just don't make JS or PHP his first programming language to learn, then it will be going fine

I just think computer science is a interesting and useful tool for children and adults to learn. I use graph theory while driving my car, I use logic in discussions as well as every other area of learning, I use AI knowledge in decision making..

And if course you want to share your passions with those you love. And wife isn't exactly a computer person..

Anyways, C, JavaScript, and PHP will NOT be first languages! I don't hate the child, I love the child!

@rrmhearts oh my god, your avatar is just like mine, with the difference of T-Shirt color !

You can buy kits (toys) for kids to learn basic programming and do the puzzles and stuff that someone else mentioned :) then it will feel like a game and they will learn a lot :) and congrats BTW

You could start with pure mathematical logic, knowing a language is less important than the ability to solve problems

@lazyDev nice. Tried to match my real life appearance, but my beard is way bigger in real life! ;)

To all those who warn about imposing your dream: Some programming skill is an important life tool, like cooking or managing personal finances.

We live in 2017, I have non technical family members asking me for links to courses, because they need basic programming knowledge to reason about a strategy for their company for example.

I don't tell my kids they have to become developers, but just like how they should be able to bake an egg, they need to know how programs are expressed in various syntaxes.

The khanacademy CS course is pretty good for such a foundation, it uses a simplified JS api and the processing library so any kid can make simple cute drawings and animations... and fork projects from others, redistribute and discuss them.

    Congrats!
Wish him/her a super happy life, so, it should be C ❤️
