I sincerely hope the tragedy in Manchester won't be used as a pretext by our technically inept politicians to push through crackdowns on encryption and further surveillance.

It was my second thought right after it happened.

It will happen. Right after the attack in London (i think) they started to criticize WhatsApp for giving terrorists 'a safe place to hide' and they actually managed to get plans in the making at European level for regulating encrypted messaging apps. It's not an if, it's a when. This is the reason I'll keep using Signal because putting bad code in open source applications is something that would be discovered fast and you can, of course, compile it yourself if you want or review the code if you want!
