Guys what do you use to connect to a linux machine in a local network? I'm aware of the existence of VNC however I don't want to go outside the lan over the internet and back in to view the desktop , i want simply to enter 192.168.1.10 and access it within my lan...

I think you want to use a VPN on this one.

SSH should still work fine. Or use something that speaks RDP if you want remote GUI access.

I can‘t see the issue here, VNC doesn‘t go out and back again, it connects directly to an IP, I use it all the time with my RaspberryPis when I need something with GUI

@possum which solution? I'm currently using realvnc to connect over the internet

You are connecting over your local network with any vnc client, not internet.

@dIREsTRAITS Yes, so do I. Never needed an account, never went over their cloud (didn‘t even know there was one).
Run RealVNC Server on the Linux machine and RealVNC Connect on your client, enter the linux machine‘s IP for new connection and use the passphrase the server gives you when turning it on.

@dIREsTRAITS Ah I see, apparently realVNC comes installed and licensed on Raspian, but that‘s not the case for other linux distros. This explains my plug&play experience with this solution.

X11 forward over ssh tunnel either over lan or portforward(Router/ ngrok).
