I kinda get it tbh
Work is more fun when uve a reason
I've to OD on coffee to earn my pay coz my work rn isn't "fun" -
@azuredivay money definitely is a valid reason, none would work in the company if the only pay they get is "thank you for being helpful company member, you are making impact in our community."
You can have different reason to work, but business is business. Business is there to make money, any societal impact is just a side effect. -
@anotherjsdev I'd like to think that socialists and to some extent anarchists love to work just for a "thank you", or at least that's how they think society should work...
BTT:
IF the salary is high enough to live without financial worries, the manager has a point, but that doesn't work for a lower income job, as getting through the month is more important, thus working is for the munnies. -
I dislike bringing religious zealotry in companies... After all, "working for higher reason" is exactly that.
@PonySlaystation
I'd rather say "Work diligent - so no one else has to fix the mess you made" as a mantra. For me that's a socialist thing. I dislike slackers - especially if they put the burden on everyone else thinking they can get away with it.
Does that make me a socialist? ;) :-P -
qwwerty11442y@iiii because you always have to cover more than just basic needs, thus you need to create a buffer. be it emergency living/transport/medical related expenses, none of them tend to be cheap.
+ people are not drones and need some leisure time and hobbies, which usually comes with expenses too -
iiii90862y@PonySlaystation that's basically what more saner people claim about socialism. That easing the pressure would make people happier and freer overall
-
only reason they pay for work is because they can't find people who would do it for free.
-
@horus Yup, I would respect them more if they were being honest about it. Or at least, pay me more and I'll be glad hearing that bullshit everytime lol.
-
@PonySlaystation that's my point. If I get paid the same amount they get, I would be more than happy doing it. But for now, I need money to survive. I can always volunteer in an NGO for more meaningful work.
-
This is a problem if the salary is low, or if it's being used to guilt people into overtime.
But if the salary and conditions are good, and there's some higher value in what the company is doing I can accept the boss saying they will not pay as much as the highest paying jobs in the industry. -
Personally I've never felt like there's any problems with devs underperforming because they aren't passionate about the higher purpose. devs that overperform might not even be doing it for the company's higher purpose - but rather for some detailed tech thing like priding themselves on good performance. At the same time there's lots of people that are deeply into the higher values but might not work extra hard because of it

hjk10156962yAs soon as the word "sin" is used outside sinus context I feel obligated to point out the ungodly truth.
If money is a sin in a commercial operation that is just next level hypocrisy.
