Samsung apparently thinks they are doing us users a favour with their "genius" TV block feature.

Let the following be clear: I will never get a television which can be remotely disabled by ANY one, even if allegedly for my benefit.

In fact, I'd be happier with 768p "HD ready" garbage from 2005 that at least works reliably than a shiny "QLED+" Samsung TV that can fail without warning at the press of a button at some giant corporation's headquarters.

Remember the May 2019 Firefox incident?

"We can remotely disable your TV, but it's just for your protec...." Get lost.

I'm curious about what happened in May 2019 with Firefox. I must've missed it.

    "Smart" Tvs are disgusting :<

@Sid2006 on May 2019, a bug on Firefox side marked all browser extensions as legacy, and thus, unusable.

A bug on Samsung side can very well turn off all these "smart" TV on our side.

I am a tech worker myself but I don't see a point of all these "smart" appliances. Smart bread toaster, smart refrigerator, smart washing machine, smart door handles, blah blah blah.

@daniel-wu Companies need to keep making profits off of something every year.

im always a big fan of dumb appliances.
In fact, i'd rather buy used appliances for the reason that they don't have all that fancy software nonsense on there.
Added bonus: they're cheaper and already have stood the test of time, so if they haven't failed yet, then it'll take a while until they do. And even if they do, in a lot of cases they are simpler to repair anyways.

I have a Vizio that has never been connected to any network ever. It will never be. I just use it as computer monitor.

    @daniel-wu

People have been hacked in their smart homes. Google went down for a while and people couldn't turn on a light switch because smart. There is no backup operation on some of these systems. You lose connection and your house can become dumb.

Hard to get a good panel without all the smart crap. I've got a big ass smart tv that is not connected to the internet. Solves that problem but still had to pay for all that shit I'm not using.

Most real useful "smart" appliances would reduce the profits of corporations.

Imagine water sink fountains that turn off after a large amount of water or lamps, heaters, ovens and ACs that go off after 30h or so - never again worried about leaving for vacations and coming back to huge bills!
Imagine door bells that do not ring if it is those annoying door to door pyramid salespeople.
Imagine laundry machines that warn you about turbo-laundering delicate clothes.

Those are simple annoyances that can be ubiquously solved forever! In ye olden days one had to refill their pens every few written sentences. Now you hardly ever ends the ink of a Bic. That IS ubiquously solving a problem forever. So useful, so simple we barely even notice it is there.
And that is why smart-home brand-addicted companies won't ever do those simple and effective stuff.
We're doomed to those subscription-based smart toilet discharges that can immitate Adele's voice (for an extra monthly fee)
