TIL that “Unix” is originally a pun on “Multics”.

    @PotatoCookie

    A number of (mostly hackish) B compilers exist, search GitHub.

    If you look it up in Wikipedia, you most likely recognize it's a predecessor of C.

    The trouble - thus the hackish compilers is - 1960s... We're talking about pre X86 world here.

    We're talking about IBM, Honeywell, General Electric, ...

    Before there were vacuum tubes...

    B is really primitive given that the hardware was primitive. Like amoeba compared to the hardware today.

    C came out 1970 ish I think... 1971-5 i think.

    That was when MOSFETs and first mass usable microprocessors were available... Just a few years, but historically very important.

    Reason why C survived so long is probably because it was written in an era when people were aware of the technological advances... Moore's law must be written around that time, too if I'm not mistaken (Rest in peace, Mr Moore and condolences to the family).

    They sure couldn't care less about creative naming. Multics - Unix, B, C.
