It bothers me that status is not a capitalized column but Boy and Girl are.

Boy/Girl should be Gender, no? sack the db architect :P

Yeah, sack the CB architect :p , there is no consistency, first query on earth with a lowercase, second one with a capital ( even dough in the case if SQL is case insensitive), also logically it could be better, selecting people's from earth where gender is x and relationship status is y.

Why would you have a boy and girl field? Could both be not null? And why would it be set to 'single' when you have a status column also.

There wouldn't be any issues if you index the Boy column and Status column.
