Sounds good, doesn't work. At least not in my country. If they ask you what your salary is and if you don't tell them, you're not getting that job. They'll ask for proof too to cross verify so you can't lie.

companies usually have budgets. If your "current salary" - the one that you tell them, is larger than their budget, they'll dismiss you right away unless they really really like you.

Well I'm in the UK and I work for a company that turns over multiple billions per year. When I started they required a lot of "proofs". These included pay slips from my previous employer.

Our head of HR looked at me right in the eyes, while handing the Nth pay slip, and said the same words each time: "Don't open it here, don't show it to anyone else". That information is as private as it can get.

@AndSoWeCode it is private in the context of other staff. But not private in terms of people in your hr dept or payroll dept. They all know everything about everyone.

That's fairly standard.

@SSDD the fact that someone hands you your pay slip suggests your company is fairly small.

@SSDD usually they don't. It was some extraordinary circumstances.
