@Froot no, php is not a relic of the past. That's quite simply ignorant and wrong.

How is it ignorant and wrong you ask? Allow me to clarify.

It's 2017 and PHP still powers the vast majority of the internet. Before you go shouting "but Wordpress" which is the easy and ignorant thing to shout, allow me to delve further.

Facebook was built in php and large chunks of it are still powered by it.

Slack was built with PHP.

Teamrock.com (recently voted the worlds most influential rock and metal music website) is built on php.

I could go on but I won't. The point being there are huge sites being developed TODAY that rely on PHP. So "relic of the past"? No.

Further PHP7 is now out and in heavy use. This pulls the language into competition with the best modern OO languages, when combined with frameworks such as Symfony or Laravel, modern best practices are further reinforced and I'm aware of many enterprise platforms from multiple industries that are utilising these setups RIGHT NOW. "Relic of the past"? No.

Lastly (only because I'm running out of characters) I earn a very large salary, and I work with people who earn very large salaries. I have a couple of friends who have gone freelance who earn salaries that would make you wince. We're all getting paid THIS MONTH, and will continue to get paid INDEFINITELY. "Relic of the past"? No.

I suspect you will read this and reply with something inane, but I hope my breakdown is enough for others who perhaps aren't as entrenched in their views and haven't yet gotten on the anti-php trend-wagon.

As for big projects using PHP...
Coal plants are also still used and they also power a large portion of the world.
PHP is like a coal plant. It's used because it used to be good and change takes time. But no-one given a choice should use it for new projects.

@Froot It did bring in something meaningful. It displays perfectly validly that PHP is not a relic of the past. You don't earn a good living from something that is a relic of the past. Floppy disks are a relic of the past, and coal power stations are akin to Wordpress (old but still in use), you can't compare coal stations to any of the modern, brand new enterprise platforms that are being build in PHP.

Apologies for the intensity but I am sick fed up of people like you sweeping and completely disregarding as "a relic of the past" such a powerful. modern and in use technology that powers countless businesses and millions of people's lifestyle.

Some kid might come here and be put of PHP because of someone like you and that might in turn put them off dev as a career. Because amongst everything else, PHP is a great entry to development. Its like a gateway drug lol.

@SSDD This is getting quite boring actually. You're obviously a die-hard PHP fan and no reason or evidence can possibly change that so there's no point in wasting my time.

Could you provide why exactly PHP is so bad? Alot of problems have been fixed in the latest version.

@Dunn Why exactly is it good? There's nothing it does better than another language. I've yet to come across a problem that I need PHP for. And you can't use it for non web related stuff, or at least you shouldn't.
That's what makes it bad, it's useless and has no purpose.
Also, it has horrible coding practices all over the place. Many may not be used anymore but bad stuff like that sticks around like a bitch.

@Froot given the comments I've made here which are loaded with evidence I don't think it's me who can't be reasoned with.

However, each to their own. I'm not saying php is the be all and end all. All I'm trying to say as it's as useful and as relevant as any other language. They all have pros and cons.

@SSDD when half of the string functions have an underline in between the subject and the verb and the others don't you know something is inconsistent in the language.
