chadd1746317yThinkPad. Macs are hard to modify later on, and I'm assuming you want this to last a while.
-
I have a personal bias for the macbook, as my little darling MBP is 4 years old and we've been on wonderful adventures across land and sea; still she looks beautiful and purrs happily 😄 although I will say; with the newest MacOS I still haven't been able to successfully set up a linux dual boot. I have to boot from USB or just use a VM. If Linux is a deal breaker, go for the ThinkPad. Apple's aftercare is great though, I've had chargers and screens replaced free of charge. The OS is really gorgeous and efficient to use. It's Unix based so terminal is great. The trackpad is a nice, solid aluminium that doesn't bend irritatingly and the whole thing is just gorgeous :)))))

wkndstrm337y@kawiikeewee Thanks! I personally have linux background and haven't played around enough with Macs in my life. I admire the build quality in Apple products though.
-
wkndstrm337y@chadd17 That's true. Although I think the company has something like 3-4 year interval after which you can get a new one
-
@wkndstrm haha you're welcome! I should also probably warn you that once you go Mac, there's no going back 😂 also, dual booting Linux will not be easy. It took me 3 attempts on the older OS (and one time I had to do the walk of shame to the apple guys and explain I broke the bootloader and they needed to reinstall everything). I'm not really qualified to defend the ThinkPad corner 😅
-
Easy. If you're gonna need Visual studio go with thiccpad.
If you're gonna need xcode go with mbp.
Either way you're gonna need to eventually get a dual boot.
Have fun 8) -
novopl137yI'm in a similar place now as I will be replacing my laptop in the next month and it's thinkpad vs mbp. I've been a thinkpad user for the past 10yr, but this time I think I'll go with mac. The reason is software.
I used to work mostly fintech, where it didn't matter, but now I'm with a digital agency and all the designer/ux software is for mac. I want to use that opportunity to learn a bit about it.
For me the war between win/linux/mac boils down to this:
linux = awesome OS / almost no apps
mac = usable OS / awesome apps
win = crappy OS / crappy apps.
I use mostly terminal, so mac is usable and linux is awesome in that regard. Especially since you have tons of cli interfaces to almost anything and you can script it easily. Macs lack a bit in this area. On the other hand, in terms of GUI apps - linux does not exist. Every linux user knows it deep in their heart, but no-one will ever admit it :) -
vadimir2007yits easy. chose one for your usecase. whats the preferred destination you wnt to build your product on?
-
devnixio9277y@OverCoder I almost went that route last year still happy with my thinkpad though. Linux support is great.

RTRMS36907y@novopl Linux, no apps, did you travel back in before posting this, to back when that was true. I just took off Windows and replaced every single one of my apps with their own Linux versions with the exception of Office and Adobe.
I don't even dual boot, I do not need Windows at all, not even to game, between steam and wine almost all games work, even AAA titles like witchery 3 and starcraft 2.
Plus I have more than 1 port.
I had a MBP, loved it, but at that price tag, for what you get, they can go fuck and entire flock of ducks. For the same price on Windows you can get a mother fucking beast of note and either dual/triple boot, fuck I installed macos on, here, why must I pay more to get less. -
@RTRMS "fuck an entire flock of ducks" is really fun to say. Thank you for this phrase.
-
@MissDirection idk. But "fuck an entire gaggle of ducks" isn't as fun. But gaggle itself is a fun word...
Edit: missed a word -
Desktop for life, non multi threaded apps love 5 GHz overclocks. And the Intel 750 makes it possible to actually run even my company's bloated VS project files fairly quickly. Also triple monitor setups are a lot easier with full blown desktop GPUs.

First of all: Dev as what?
Second: if you don't need a mac for iOS or OS X development screw that.
Webdevelopment can be done on any os doesn't matter if Linux mac or windows. Unless you need that super shiny laptop to push your ego get something cheaper that's also decent and have fun with that.

So, devRant: MacBook Pro or ThinkPad (in the same price range)?
