why exactly would you want to use type inference in a statically typed language?

Awlex177477y@Liz3 Kotlin is just a language that get compile down to java. Also I'm pretty sure you give it the type at the construction.

or
var v: myVar? = null
And because it's decalred, the smart IDE can give you good recommendations.
