I have a very old PC with XP on it. It's become hardly usable over the years (10 of them). While I'm waiting for the external HDD I've ordered (to backup data), could I boot a linux distro from an USB? How would it be performance wise?

@killermenpl Let's say I just want to browse the internet (hardly can currently). Would the computer perform better on linux from usb?

Depends on the Distro and the connection. With USB2 (as I guess) it takes a little longer, but it's usable. Take a lightweight distro, e. g. SwagArch.

@killermenpl Memdisk could be a solution.

    pendrivelinux.com has got you covered.
Always use it when trying a Linux distro.
