How many of you have your own personal website like name.com or something
Also my mentor recommended I build one if I get time. Should I???? I have taught myself HTML,CSS and can mostly understand JavaScript Would it be worth it???

It's still a work in progress, but I have one and it's a good way to portfolio yourself and get side jobs

I do. But it has its pros and cons...

I've tried to many to times to build one for me.. i was always unhappy with the design or something else.. but it could be useful if you want to get new clients

They're dead easy and a great way to make yourself seem more professional.

There are a couple of reasons for doing one. First, to try out some new ideas in a particular setting rather than just on your dev machine and secondly to showcase your capabilities.

If you see yourself needing a professional public profile for jobs or speaking engagements or such like, it's a good tool for that.

i honestly do have a website, but 13 years into my career i didn't have one... then i decided to make one. took me around 20 minutes to develop it, doesn't have anything in it, but i did it just to reserve my domain name :P

@amjo I reckon we've a million sites between us that we've just stuck something simple onto to keep our domain! 🙂

The most important thing for a portfolio website, is writing the concept and the copytext. Don't code or design anything, until you're certain what do you want to say.
70% concept & writing, 30% designing & coding.
keep the texts short.

@amjo The variation I know of is "The shoemaker's son never has shoes". I've never been motivated to do my own site because I've never needed it to sell myself. But I suspect if I'm looking for a new job in the next couple of years, I might need to consider it.
