Seeing someone prototype a 3D game with complex lighting using OpenGL in a 15 minute video (It was sped up about 4x but, still, fuck me)

Using c. Not c++.

He also did 3D graphics in BASIC from scratch to explain how they work, generally.

    I just checked out his channel and was jaw dropped for the entirety of the video.

    We take our modern day graphics for granted, from simple Paint to triple A games, but fuck! Somewhere, somebody wrote a code just like this in a language just like this to create a game engine our graphics are based on. I got mad respect for this dude. He doesn't seem to be on YouTube anymore although.

    I apologise, I was just working off memory, it seems he did use c++ but that doesn't really make it any less impressive. He does have a Doom-style game engine video in c however, I think that's what I was confusing it with. Here's the video I talked about, which also serves as a link to his channel.
