Ubuntu, just like @stop said or try it out Mint. Never tried myself but people say it's good for starters.

The apt is (relative) easy to use and the ppa repos makes it easy to add software.

@eskizo More or less just smack it down on a USB and install? Is the grub bootloader included? And thanks for the tip :)

@Thommelutten pretty sure it is, I am not really a fan of dual boot, but that might be an option of installing it alongside other os with all set.

The most distros use grub as default.

What is the difference between Ubuntu and Linux? Some of you mention Ubuntu distributions, and some of you Linux? :)

@Thommelutten Linux is a Kernel, Ubuntu is a OS based on the Linux kernel (A Linux Distribution) and because of its nature, Ubuntu is open source, so many make Ubuntu based Distros

Take a look at goole on Linux and Linux distributions. Ubuntu is a Linux Distribution, just like Mint, also a Linux distro

@1989 before I considered Linux, I was a light terminal user in OS X, so I had a nice and easy start :)

I've worked a bit with Powershell, but have always been a Windows user, so I decided to try out something new :D. But ill do a backup of the harddrive before I install.

Linux Mint(Cinnamon) is a pretty good start

Ubuntu based distro is a solid choice.
I recommend you to try smth with KDE desktop. I think It's the most user friendly with a lot of gui options.

If you want to have a community based distro, Arch is also a nice choice. Tough vanilla can be a bit hackery to setup, so maybe try some more user friendly derivative, like Manjaro.
