MacBooks are superior to cheap PC notebooks with poorly configured Windows 11, but not to a proper high-end Linux laptop.
-
Tounai10831y@electrineer criteria is not being slow as hell, which is a shame even for a 2500$ laptop with a 400$ config
-
@electrineer of course it does, for example, MacBooks are superior to any PC machine when it comes to vendor-lock-in.
Apart from my irony, many respect this as a feature: you can't customize much about a Mac, and there is always one right and proper way to do something. -
@fraktalisman
"MacBooks are superior to any PC machine when it comes to vendor-lock-in."
How did you arrive at this conclusion? Isn't Apple hardware Apple dongle (overpriced) hell? Can you install your own hard drives and ram? I seem to remember this being an Apple service center thing. -
@Demolishun Macs have superior vendor lock in. As in they are better at locking you into Apple.
You inverted what they said in your head because you believe vendor lock in is bad and can never be superior, but this is erroneous. Vendor lock in is just a feature, and someone can be superior at it, regardless if that feature is good or bad. -
Apple software is utter garbage. I can't enjoy using any of their products for long enough to form an opinion on the hardware.
-
@lungdart thanks for explaining. Was very confused. If you want that ecosystem I guess its a plus.
-
@cuddlyogre I hate their UX, but their hardware is really decent.
I wish there was a high end Linux vendor. I have a system 76, but it feels like a plastic toy next to my work macbook -
I’m terms of highest quality hardware within the smallest space, I think Macs have that championship locked down…they also win first place in leg lap burn
-
I used to be all in on Asus stuff. Then they fucked up some of the products. Now I won't touch them. They used to be pretty good, but I can see this rot in their designs.
-
@Demolishun No cap, I currently use Asus ROG Phone 5S and an Asus ROG Strix Scar G17 laptop.
It's got 32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD and RTX 3080 Graphics.
No complaints so far. I've been using both devices for over a year. -
It's hard to beat the Macbook trackpad.
It's also hard to put a higher markup price on storage and RAM than Apple does.
(this has been the case for years) -
@Demolishun I upgraded from an HP Pavilion laptop (Core i5 4 GB ram and GTX 430 Graphics).
that I used for 6 years.
My problem with it was the thick bezels on the screen and inferior keyboard.
Asus has it better though. Mechanical keyboard and very thin bezels. LED display is a killer though. -
@jiraTicket Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that can't stand it. It's just way too big for me and constantly gets in the way - I'm forever tapping it by mistake while trying to type and switching focus to a window I'm not trying to type in.
-
@AlmondSauce Oh yeah that can absolutely be the case. I felt the same when transitioning from a less responsive trackpad - I didn't want it to do anything unless I touched it very clearly. Not saying the Mac trackpad is it's objectively good for everyone's use case (just that an argument can be made for it being objectively good for certain cases or maybe even a majority)
of course if you don't enjoy that type - no use paying for it. -
Given the fact that Mac and Windows are used for different things by different people I really think I would prefer $1.2k of cocaine.
-
Tounai10831y@lungdart it can be made of gold or of meteorite that I wouldn’t care. All I want is to be able to work without overheating as soon as I do something that requires a bit of CPU
-
Tounai10831y@AlgoRythm cmon for devs everything work, even if power shell is crap, you can use WSL and done.
-
Yeah they are, once you install Linux on them ! No kidding.
I have a m1 mac mini running Asahi, It fucking outperforms my t4g.2xlarge instances -
@lungdart I am quite happy about my Tuxedo Infinitybook. Finally something German that I can feel proud about ;-)
-
@lungdart @fraktalisman also hope Musk doesn't get tempted to acquire their shop because of their X logo. At least Ubuntu doesn't have any "AI" / Siri / Cortana stuff shipped by default.
The next one who tells me “MacBooks are superior” will take mine in the face at a speed no benchmark ever recorded.
