Wait so they're gonna use my PC to mine Bitcoin? Thanks, 44th president of the United States of 'Murica
-
@SpencerBeige PirateBay tested it to mine Monero on category and search pages, as a way to offset costs and potentially get rid of ads.
-
@TheCapeGreek I don't really mind ads. I did like that idea on silicon valley, tho, to use inactive phones as a network
-
@SpencerBeige ads currently have a low success rate for their cost and are becoming more intrusive lately across many sites, so I'd imagine that this system would be welcome by many if done ethically.
-
Jifuna37307yI did some research on this and its not really profitable for websites with even a userbase of 2 million

Jifuna37307y@TheCapeGreek This were two questions on bitcoin stackexchange I could find back and one reddit:
https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/q...
https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/q...
https://reddit.com/r/BitcoinMining/...
I also read somewhere else that even if you used webgl to its full potential it wasnt really good simply because most consumer use integrated graphics and thats nothing compared to a bitcoin rack. -
@Jifuna thanks for the links. Yeah, Monero is more profitable here. Coin Hive shows their justification for it on their site.

Falk3117yPiratebay really pulled a dickmove.
I know the coin-hive guys. They tested it on a small imageboard. You had to explicitly open the miner in a new tab and thats the way it should be. No shady unwanted 100% cpu mining. -
@Falk Yeah I noticed that. Their idea seems great. But this clearly won't be a great start and surely competition will now spring up for them.

Thiago791-1243dTo add a new block to the blockchain, the majority of the nodes in the network must reach a consensus. There are https://casinosnotongamstop.co/ different consensus mechanisms such as Proof of Work (PoW), Proof of Stake (PoS), and others, each with its own way of ensuring the integrity of the network.

devRanters beware! In-browser JavaScript crypto mining is becoming a thing.
https://coin-hive.com/
I found
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
Which will block browser coin miners on Chrome for now. Other ad/script blockers might work (though not always guaranteed).
Currently, these miners don't limit their CPU usage (and neither does the browser) so it's not great for your PC use.
If implemented correctly, like only using for a few seconds or for captchas/link shorteners (as suggested on the Coin Hive site), this could be a nice alternative to ads. But there is a guarantee that many will start using this unethically and not even tell users, nevermind that they'll do it for the entire session of the site.
Add Service Workers to the mix and it's a bag of trouble.
