So, recently, a person in the US was arrested for stalking people.

The evidence was some data from google, a work computer and from a VPN provider.

Let's take a quick look at that VPN provider. It (PureVPN) says on their privacy policy page that they do NOT store logs.

Guess from what VPN provider the FBI got those logs? Yes, PureVPN!

Althouh I'm happy they got this creep off the street, it still means that PureVPN has been lying to its entire customer base.

I personally hope that their reputation will be destroyed now because this should never happen.

The only legit VPN service is Private Internet Access. FBI previously asked them for records and they refused it.

@SZenC Still gotta do loads of research but I think that NordVPN/PrivateInternetAccess/MullVad look quite good :)

@tahnik I've used them yes, their service is awesome! Problem I've got is that they are US based and could be forced to implement backdoors if requested so without that becoming public :/

@wholl0p they log everything. People hacked into their vpn servers (RCE vulnerabilities) and downloade sql databases :/. And yeah, ive been using them for a while :(

Any expectation of privacy in our modern age is almost naive. We have traded our privacy for technology. And honestly I am okay with that. I have nothing to hide. If the government wants to know about my embarrassing fetishes, the games I play, or how much money I spend on Weeabo crap...go for it. I really don’t care.

@ThatDude @Condor If you're the only person using your private VPN, it doesn't help a bit: Every outgoing connection can be tracked down to you (provided your the data is demanded from your hosting service).

@CopyPasteCode Since I use ProtonMail, I added on VPN for a bundle discount. So far, so good. I still have PIA, but they are blocked a lot on legit streaming sites. Windows client for ProtonVPN is really nice. For my Mac, I just downloaded their OpenVPN profiles and imported them into Viscosity. Speeds seem decent. Based in Switzerland. Not cheap, but good stuff isn't always. I have been running 24/7 for about a week.

Also, isn't PureVPN the place that traced some hacker harassing someone out of a Chicago node, or is this the situation we're discussing? From what I understand, they don't log as a rule, but if someone is being harassed, for instance, they post a notice that they are turning logging on for a specific node before they do it.

I'm not sure what a good middle ground would be here. VPN access should not be used as a cloak to harass or stalk people. The phrase, "This is why we can't have nice things" comes to mind.

I'm not really get in VPN unless it's for accessing a site that requires anonimity. Usually I had some free to use VPN tools like anonymox. Trying to find out now any best VPN provider

@PhantomBKB As we've seen with PureVPN, that statement isn't necessarily true. Also, that's not the main point I don't think. PIA is US based, so they can be forced to START keeping logs without telling anyone. Anything US based is basically useless in terms of privacy or anonymity.

Just don't consider any of these VPN Providers as an anonymous way for surfing. Use Tor instead.

I think PureVPN is already very shady VPN in the market, I have read a lot of posts that PureVPN is Pakistan Based VPN, Mean seriously Pakistan based VPN claiming that it is best. I want to give a standing ovation to PureVPN users that they are still using it.

However I am very conscious about my online privacy, and I cant use these shady VPNs, Recently I have a signup for Surfshark VPN, No don't it is one of the best VPN that I had ever used. So I recommend Surfshark (https://reviewsed.com/surfshark-vpn...) to those who are still using PureVPN.

@markophillips Three immediate red flags:
- Based in a British (owned?) country and thus under the 5 eyes regime.
- I can't even find their privacy policy on their homepage...
- They use Google analytics on their homepage... So... A "privacy respecting" company uses analytics from a company integrated within government mass surveillance programs and having a very bad privacy track record....

I'd stay the hell away from this provider myself.

Yes you are right there is no privacy policy mentioned on the homepage, MullVad is good.
