I get that fingerprint authentication is very convenient but I'd never use it (not even for privacy reasons that much).

When someone guesses/gets your password you can just say "alright let's change my password"

Imagine that with fingerprints: "yeah sure let me change my fingers"

😆

But how would you even guess a fingerprint? That's the whole point of biometrics

You can cut a small piece of your finger and rearrange the fingerprint... Sounds legit to me :)

Is there anything more secure than passwords?
  • 2
@404response depending on use case, yes
  • 1
    @SZenC That's why I said guessing/getting :)
  • 3
@Condor thank you, didn't know about this. I will do further research on it :)
  • 1
    Yea
samsung users won't change their fingers instead they'll jump to iris scanner and apple iphone x users will shift to truedepth face recognition
  • 2
@chowdercake I'm still sceptical about both of those technologies. I'll have to see it to believe it
  • 2
@SZenC I m not supporting them since I haven't seen them working myself

Just wanted to take 'changing fingers' further to 'changing eyes' or whole face
  • 3
I will always use a fingerprint for the convenience. And I know this is kidding but you can't really guess someone's finger print... well not within the century at least (unless you're the FBI).

Still absurd to me that finger print locking isn't protected by the 4th amendment.
  • 2
@chowdercake that's actually pretty easy. You can use plastic surgery, full face masks or colored lenses. It not cheap, but it's not difficult either.
  • 4
@DavidBittner not only talking about guessing but for example having friends unlocking your phone in your sleep.... 😛
  • 3
@linuxxx are you that heavy of a sleeper? Lmao if someone touches me while I sleep I am awake super fast. Groggy but awake! Plus. It means I can let my girlfriend unlock my phone with her fingerprint without giving her my oh so precious password ;)
  • 2
@SZenC Are you kidding? In what world is getting plastic surgery to unlock a phone easy lmao
  • 1
@SZenC if you can use a mask then the same mask can be used by someone else
same goes for iris color lens
  • 1
@DavidBittner it isn't _easy_, but it isn't hard either, it sure is expensive, time consuming and not easily reversed, but it isn't hard to get a picture and get modified to look alike.
  • 1
    @chowdercake that's exactly my point.
  • 1
@SZenC I wasn't talking about the face recognition. I'm skeptical about that. Seems eh to me. Additionally it isn't just a picture of your face. It's depth data as well. I imagine it's very precise if Apple is backing it.

Say what you want about Apple, but they've shown they know security. Maybe they're onto something.
  • 2
@DavidBittner yeah, Apple has a good track record for security, but I still want to see a real life demo (with testing for false positive and negatives) before I believe it.

You have 20 fingers (normally). You can use any finger for auth and change regularly. The password is required after 3 wrong attempts of fingerprint auth. Guessing the right finger in 3 attempts has a probability of only 0.15. Not perfectly safe, but not completely vulnerable.

I turned on fingerprint authentication on my mom's iPhone.

Somehow her fingerprint can't unlock anymore though.. But mines can

If you think about it pretty wierd.

I can easily use her phone but she had to enter a 6 digit PIN Everytime...

@linuxxx but at least no one can use her fingers to unlock and they won't know why 😂
  • 2
@Condor so one of those plug usb authentication sticks or a microchip inserted into your body might work?

I use oneplus 5's scanner, fuck it, convenient.

If I was really desperate to get in your phone, I’d just drug you and use your finger 🙂

@Schlarman you must be desperate to comment thrice

@SZenC u beat me to it....
  • 1
    Awww, poor @billgates
  • 2
@SZenC well I don't want to rub it in but I'm not that poor? 😁
  • 2
@billgates those that are richest are often the poorest of us all...
Damn I'm getting philosophical (or I'm turning into one of the floaty yoga Zen people, your pick)

@linuxxx where is your linuxxx hashtag, mate?

I am struggling to find your posts in the stream.
And yeah, I follow the same thought as you. Even for the RFID-Chips used in "modern surgeries".
It's all a method of tracking, but ain't no one gets it ffs.

Sometimes I ask myself, if I am getting weirder or if humanity is just getting more stupid by time... geez
  • 2
@SZenC they're typically stored as hashes, so you can guess the hash and get in
  • 3
@SZenC @chowdercake note 7 had iris scanner. Annoying af, especially if you wear glasses
  • 2
@Condor wouldn't a MicroSD card be better? You can just eat it if worse gets to worst.
  • 3
@QueenMorgana there was an issue for asian people, it asks them to open their eyes completely.

Sometimes even tech can be racist.
  • 1
    @olezhka same here
  • 1
@chowdercake I can see how that might be a problem...
