I would agree. People just want to use technology; they don't care about how to fix it if it goes wrong or even the basic logic behind it.
That's why Apple has ~5% of the PC market; everything just works out of the box and it's pretty. No one who uses them cares about the fact that Windows apps don't work natively, or that it's really hard to get to the hidden folders. They just care that they can turn it on and go to Facebook.
And it's sad, because if people learned even the basics of how to take care of their computers, my job would be 200% easier. But no, to most people it's moon magic that is only known by wizards. -
@RiderExMachina yeah, also the number of devices running software and connected to the internet is increasing daily, sadly the amount of people knowing how to write the software isn't

I've had a plot bunny for a story like this, where the amount of people who know tech are so few that the world crumbles or something. I'd really only thought about the fewer tech-literate people. -
@404response I won't say that I know something about the gap but I can agree with you on the note @RiderExMachina. Initially technology was introduced to make people's life easier but now people use tech as if their heart will stop if they won't check out their social media and stuff.

I completely agree with your premise that the gap in knowledge is increasing exponentially. But I believe that it’s increasing in all fields, not just in computer science/technology (albeit some at a greater rate than others). For example other than some basic knowledge of the human body and the cell, I have absolutely no clue about how medications like a clue vaccine is created. Yet I still use it ...
In that sense I think ur logic is flawed because everyone can’t be highly informed on every subject matter available. It’s based on our own curiosity and passion that drives us further in our pursuit for knowledge.

@illusion466 yes, they are all based on conjecture, it's just a thought I had. I also know more examples that's just the one I wrote in the rant.
After reading the other comments as well I understand that my rant is kinda wrong . I have understood now thanks to @javaMaster that this is happening in all fields and is something normal. Humanity has gained so much knowledge in so many different fields that it is impossible for one person to be an 'expert' in all those fields -
I want to disagree with you. Yes there are and always will be alot of people with no clue what they are doing but compare it to a few years back where either you worked with pcs professionally and had some clue new most of it then you where a geek or engineer at ibm, intel, etc (or both) or you where part of the majority and had basically no clue at all.
Nowadays most children and adults have at least a basic understanding of what they are doing. Yes the guy in your example thought somethink you think is dumb or funny but if he where born 10-20 Years erlier at the same age he would probably only now a folder as a paper thing to collect documents used in management and a file would be a piece of paper.
I think the gap is not growing but getting smaller (at least in tech knowlege) because more people need to at least have a basic understanding and more and more people want to work with pcs and not every one who tries a bit of coding will go professional and keeps on learning. -

@javaMaster your definetly right for the point that there is more and more to know but i dont think there are two groups of people one knowing more one knowing next to nothing which keep on drifting apart.
I think its like most things in nature a Gaussian distribution which is just getting more and more spread out.
And sadly even the computer sience knowledge is so big that one person can't know it all.

Truth.
I am sure that a lot of you have heard about the gap between poor and rich growing. You know that the amount of really poor people and the amount of really rich people is increasing and that the amount of people in between is decreasing. The gap between poor and rich is growing.
But this rant isn't about economy or anything, I think something similar is happening in the technology sector.
I think that the gap between people knowing close to nothing or just really the stuff to get along and people that really know a lot about it is growing. Right now there are so many things happening in technology, quantum computers and especially machine learning. While on the other hand there are so many people not caring or rather not knowing about all of this stuff. Now you might think that this only is true for some of the 'older generations', those that didn't grow up with all the technology. But I can say that today's youth isn't any better.
For example:
One of my classmates had to copy a file into a folder. They both were on the desktop. He clicked on the file and dragged it onto the folder. It was loading and after around 10 seconds it still wasn't finished, so he stopped it, moved the file closer to the folder and tried it again. This really happened and I am 99% sure that he was serious.
Now I don't know if this is just some 1am thought I had but I really think that the 'gap' between people with almost no technology knowledge / interest and people who are making the stuff and really know stuff about it is growing at an alarming rate.
3 billion devices may run java but there aren't 3 billion people who know Java.
Please let me hear your opinion about this :)
