My mom's laptop is always on 80-90% CPU even in idle and it is obviously hella slow and I am the one who has to work with it usually (since my mom is too afraid to use any kind of technology and can't remember any of her passwords), I tried to solve it but I came to the conclusion that the problem is probably Windows 10 itself. Okay, the hardware is bad too but still.

I started thinking about installing Linux on it, but It's not my laptop and I do not want to mess it up and I never did it before.

    Make a backup + image.
Then just try it. If she just only goes on it to go on the internet she'll be fine with linux and chromium || firefox

@rootshell actually I just remembered that she has to use this software (to grade her students) that only runs with Microsoft Silverlight ...

Then maybe just install windows 7?

Open it up and clean it from dirt and dust, if you haven't already

80-90% in idle is obviously not normal. What does the task manager say? Do the processes add up to 100% or is there something hidden?
Make sure to check admin processes.

@nikola1402 turn it on and off again too?

@CWins I wanted to attach a screenshot but I'm not at home at the moment, but I will check the task manager again as soon as I get home, I remember that not only CPU was utilized fully but the RAM too and it all seemed to be windows processes

Open it up, clean it out, backup, reinstall the os, restore backup. I suggest roadkill's unstoppable copier to move files around, if there's lots, and ninite to reinstall basic apps like chrome, av and silverlite.

@unfinishedCode I would say strip that hard drive, treat it like it was a smelly diaper or anything similar, get a new hard drive, install windows again with provided discs :D

But then it implies opening the computer and swapping stuff inside :/

Woah it changes every second, I uninstalled some programs and it was on 30% than och changed gradually back to 60% until it was at 90% now it's changing every second (CPU usage) , what seems to be at the top is Anti-Malware Service Executable (Windows Defender probably), background tasks and system and all kinds of other windows programs

Have you tried a Linux liveUSB? If the CPU still goes nuts, it might be the hardware.
  • 2
@Fiftyseven I'll try that, but I think Windows is just trying to download updates all the time or sth like that

Do you have two anti-virus battling each other? 😞😟
  • 2
    @CWins nope only windows defender

What happens if you pull the internet? Updates should stop.
  • 2
@CWins the CPU usage went down to around 15 % but sometimes it goes up to 40% and 42% Ram is used by windows

It's not (voluntarily or involuntarily) running a bitcoin miner or something, is it?
